Removing the Google Map / Sex Criminal Locations Map

Greetings All !

Just a note that I’m finally removing something from the site that’s been out-of-date for a while.

This past summer, I downloaded Jackson County Sex Offender information from the State of Missouri’s website. I then plugged it into a database on my website… then wrote a little application to build a Google Map from the data, allowing you to drill down into the data by crime type and/or zip code.

Well, I only updated the data again once. And it took me all day to do it (had to identify and remove duplications, make address corrections, lookup latitudes and longitudes, etc.).

It was too much work and now there are other applications out there that do the same sort of thing better… or at least I’ve heard that such things are in the works. I did read a few months ago where the State of Missouri was going to “beef up” its data on this a bit.

Anyways, I’ve deleted that stuff off.

If you’re curious about my ability to do little things with Google Maps, you can see a couple of mine in action at:

1) KansasCityAntiqueMalls.com — A little side-project of mine. A small work of love.

2) WinnerNeighbors.org — There’s a “Maps” page there that has links to two static maps I’ve made recently. This is my website for our area’s voluntary home owner’s association. The site itself isn’t “live” yet. But the maps are working.

Thanks!

A lot of Catching-Up to Do !

Well, it’s been way too long since I’ve posted here. Please forgive me!

The warm weather of the past month has brought me a sudden burst of activity…. both yard-work and more relaxing events.

I get such a kick out of watching my wife, Terry, as she goes around the yard, discovering surprising new plants sprouting up in the yard ! (Remember, we’re new to this house, so this is our first Spring on the lot! We don’t really know what all to expect.)

Although I enjoy growing things, I don’t enjoy spending hours in the yard working at it. So, Terry and I are thinking about ways to reduce the future maintenance required by our garden…. plus, …

Been working…

Sorry for the lack of posts over the last few days. I’ve been very busy with my day-job.

Not much to talk about with regards to the house right now. But now that I’m off-shift for the next five days, I’m sure I’ll have a few things to do. But here’s all the news I can tell you so far:

1) With regards to the air conditioning and the thermostat. I have basically learned that the air temperature in the room with the thermostat in it is about 3 degrees warmer than what the thermostat SAYS it is at any given moment. That inaccuracy seems to have been a large part of my problem in …

Good news today!

Well, we got a bit of good news today:

1) The neighbors next door told us that a cop stopped by to see them, reporting that they’d captured the guy who stole their stuff! Of course, this surprised them, because they hadn’t had anything stolen! Yes, the officer had the wrong house. I’m suppossed to call the detective to discuss the capture and the items that were stolen from our garage a few weeks back.

2) We FINALLY have the furnace scheduled for replacement next week Monday, after a bit of phone-tag with the company we’re hiring to do it.

Other than that, not much to report in the way of “house events”.

More on the “Welcome Wagon”

Went to mow the lawn and discovered two more items are missing from the garage… this is stuff that I must have overlooked the other day: A gas can (for the lawnmower gas) and a weed-eater.

Bought a replacement gas can, filled the mower, started mowing. Discovered that my thieves from the other night had actually CUT THE CHAIN-LINK FENCE at the rear of our property to get in there.

Called the police / made a police report. Discussed with the officer improving the lighting in the back of the property.

Introduced myself to Frank, our neighbor to the rear. His large property is bordered on three sides by multiple properties. Advised him about our break-in and about …
