What Furniture Polish to use ?

Filed under: General — Admin @ 7:17 am

Greetings All !

I’ve been trying to decide what polish to use on that set of antique barrister bookcases that I recently “inherited early”.

A guy at work who is also an antique dealer recommended “Minwax Antique Oil Finish”, but I was having problems finding that in the stores.

So I did some quick Googling and I found a very intersting article, suppossedly by the “Senior Furniture Conservator” at the Smithsonian Institution.

Click here to open up a new window with that article in it.

This person says that “semi-solid polishes (paste waxes) are the most beneficial to wooden objects”.

Here’s another article that reinforces this recommendation. It also says something I had heard before: don’t use lemon oil !!

Both articles also warn me not to use any products containing silicone. But this second article gets more specific about the product. It says to “only buy a high-quality, cabinetmaker’s wax, one designed specifically for wood furniture”.

So now I’ve got to figure out where to buy this locally.

Interesting mental note: I remember looking at the various products at a couple of antique malls over the weekend. The only paste wax I recall seeing was something called “Briwax”. Not sure if that’s considered to be a “high-quality, cabinetmaker’s wax”.

I’ll see what I can find here around town. Not sure what store to go to, actually.

Thanks!
